He did everything which there was to be done. But fate had decided otherwise hence the tragic death of his wife left an indelible scar on his heart. This was the point when he started to challenge the justice of God. He was never an atheist per se. You can say it was an open rebellion against God therefore he was a firm believer of God's existence otherwise what else had he rebelled against? So the point is atheism covers a wide spectrum of definitions and some of those definition do not, at all, renounce the presence of God as I explained in the story.
