He crept back from the edge

Hi,

Can you describe the action when he crept back from the edge? He was not on the edge, wasn't he?

Three terrifying minutes later, he pulled himself up onto the mantel above the fireplace. Pausing to catch his breath and quiet his pounding heart, he looked over the edge. He crept back from the edge and crawled across the mantel, afraid to stand to his feet.

Did he retract his body from the edge?

Thank you.

It seems to be describing either a small animal or shrunken human, or a normal size human on a giant mantel. So he could be at the edge. The creeping back action is surely self-explanatory, is it not?

The writing isn't great. I can't see him looking over the edge. Was he standing? Was he prostrate? How did he get on all fours so he could creep and crawl? I can't tell what the writer meant by "creep" when I don't know what position the character is in.

Sorry for not providing enough context.
This boy was a normal human being, but he was encountered by a giant, who lived in a huge castle, and the fireplace was very huge too.
