He can win some

Are '1' and '2' correct in the given contexts:

Why does he play so many chess games against himself?
1) That way he can win some.

'1' is supposed to mean that he can win some chess games if he plays against himself.

==
Why do they have so many civil wars?
2) That way they can win some.

'2' is a comment made in jest. It is supposed to mean that they can't win wars against others.

I think 'some' in '2' means 'some civil wars' and not 'some wars'. i therefore think that the sentence doesn't work.
I think it should be:
'That way they can win some wars.'

Gratefully,
Navi.
