They feel a bit awkward. The simplest alternative is probably:

"He asked me how long I wanted to live."

But this arguably does not have quite the same sense to it.

Trying to think how I would spontaneously formulate your sentences in everyday speech, I arrived at:

"He asked me what age I wanted to live to."
