He asked me if I was interested in meeting him...

Hi

Do you find the following lines natural, especially the yellow parts? Any suggestions are welcome.

He asked me if I was interested in meeting him. He had that typical thick British accent, thus I was straining to understand him (besides the other discombobulating feeling that my boss was constantly watching me from his office).

Thanks,

Tom

I would replace "thus" with "so". "discombobulating" is OK in itself, but it's kind of a joke word, so if the rest of your text is in a serious tone it probably wouldn't be suitable. The standard replacement would be "disconcerting".

  • From a rigid textbook perspective, "besides" seems slightly grammatically iffy in this role, but in practice I think it works OK.
