Grammar

He appeared in court facing/faced two counts of theft.

He appeared in court facing/faced two counts of theft.

I am confused about the grammar relating to the use of "facing" here.
Could you explain why it is "facing" not "faced" or something else?
Initially, I thought that it is "facing" because the verb "appear" is followed by V-ing. However, that is wrong.
Thank you.

The sentence is in the active voice and consequently the present participle is used: He appeared in court and faced two counts of theft.

Another similar example: He walked in carrying a heavy suitcase.(= and carried / was carrying a heavy suitcase)
