He apologized about his research?

Does "He apologized about his research" mean "Shinya Yamanaka apologized for his own research"?
It seems that I've failed to understand the meaning of "about" there. Otherwise, it is hard to understand why he, a Nobel laureate, would have apologized for his Nobel-Prize-winning research work.

Context:

On 4 June 2014, Obokata agreed to retract both the papers published in Nature in early 2014.[22] Nature confirmed the retraction on July 2.[23][24]
Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka was dragged into the controversy and could not find his lab notes from this time.[25] He apologized about his research.[26][27]
On August 5, 2014, Obokata's mentor and co-author Yoshiki Sasai committed suicide.[28]
