having trouble with the word " otherwise "

Contrary to popular belief, therefore, owning a DVD recorder actually stimulates people to go to movie theathers more often than they otherwise would.

What does it mean " contrary to popular belief " ?

What does it mean " they otherwise would " ? Does that mean " they don't have " ?

Thanks

The popular belief is that owning a dvd recorder doesn't stimulate people to to to movie theaters more often while the contrary " owning a DVD recorder actually stimulates people to go to movie theaters more often" is what is actually the case.
