Having trouble with the naturalness of 2 sentences?

Could you please help me rephrase or correct these 2 thoughts?

1 He wouldn't put anyone before himself other than his child. Other than his child, there is no one he cares about more than himself. (sound off to my ear)

2 We were friends but we couldn't live together because of our personality. They didn't go together when it came to living together. She was the messy type, I the anal type.

Thank you

Ps can you say "sounds off to my ear" by the way please?

Thank you MM,

For 2

They didn't go together when it came to living together. She was the messy type, I the **** type.

Is there not a better way to say this?

I've never heard "sounds off to my ear" is that idiomatic?

Thank you
