Is it correct to say:

They met people having the same problems as theirs.

"Them" is an object pronoun; it sounds odd to me.

Yes. It's grammatically correct. However, most people would not use the participle form 'having'. Most people would say something more like this:

They met people who had the same problems as [theirs / they did].

"Them" is an object pronoun. I think it can be used in this sentence, just as I'd use it, for example, in "I'm going home now, just like him (=like he is)" or "You have the same model of car as me (=as I do)" or "You visited the same house as us (=as we did)". I just hope I'm right...
