Check Terry's answer again closely.

JohnParishen I changed my mind because I realized he couldn't do anything for me.
Thanks, I got distracted by "do nothing" and wanted to change it to "couldn't do anything". Somehow my damned fingers and my mind are one step out of sync. Sorry!

Hi Jim,
Just to satisfy my own curiosity, does "realized" fit right in the original sentence as written ?

Thanks,

dimsumexpressdoes "realized" fit right in the original sentence as written ?
No, not unless you use "and":

I changed my mind and realized that ....

Otherwise it's considered a "run-on" sentence.

Thanks Jim, That's what I thought and that's why I boldly said "realizing" is the only correct answer as written in the OP.
Then I added the "because" alternative with "realized". Thank you for the validation..

Is there a difference in meaning? Between 1 and 2:

1) Then I changed my mind, realizing that he could do nothing to help.
2) Then I changed my mind, having realized that he could do nothing to help.

Thanks,
LS

louiSTIs there a difference in meaning?
Only slightly. having realized puts the realization slightly more prior to the change of mind.

For all practical purposes they are the same.
