Hello,
I have some problem with this sentence:
Descartes epitomises —and was widely seen by his contemporaries as having inspired— the enormous social, scientific and even religious changes taking place in the Enlightenment.
Given having inspired, Does it mean Descartes was under effect of Enlightenment, or
Enlightenment was under effect of Descartes?
Descartes was inspiring of Enlightenment, or Enlightenment was inspiring of Descartes?
Thanks a lot.
anonymous Given having inspired, Does it mean Descartes was under effect of Enlightenment, orEnlightenment was under effect of Descartes? Descartes' essays inspired Newton, Hobbes, Liebniz, Locke, and other philosophers who lived during the time period we call the "Enlightenment". He started the modes of thinking of these influential people.
