Having difficulties to understand the meaning of a phrase

Hi everyone,

When gathering information for my project, I found a perfect article to use as a source. However, the first sentence (of the article) proved to be too much for my language skills, as I couldn't work out the meaning for the bolded phraise:

"In general use the term theory is often used as being equivalent to concept or hypothesis; that is, any abstraction." (http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/crystaloutreach/nav02.cfm?nav02=60622&nav01=60603 )

Any help or advice greatly appreciated! As a non-native speaker, I sometimes, especially when it comes to more advanced English, try to understand English texts through 'translating' them partly into my native language (Finnish). This might be 'a piece of cake' for native speakers but I found it difficult. For me, it would be the most helpful if someone could come up with a equivalent phrase that is easier to understand.

Thanks in advance!

Hi AlpheccaStars,

Yes, this is actually the only part of 'my problem' I have already realized. Owing to the abstractness of the praise (Abstraction, in a sense, can be interpreted in many ways. This is why it is a too wide term for me here.), I just can't figure out the usage in the above-mentioned context (What the w

The writer is saying that a theory is based on taking many observations of a phenomenon, eliminating the details that make each one distinct, and getting to the core that is common element among them.

That is the process of abstraction in its most general sense - ANY kind of abstraction - in the fields of art, mathematics, science, etc.
