Having believed & Believing

I came across a problem to make a choice as follow:

22 _________ the earth to be flat, many feared that would fall off the edge of the earth.

A) Having believed B) Believing

C) Believed D) Being believed

I thought A) is correct, but the answer is B). What is the difference between A and B?

Thank you in advance.
