Having a client

In fact, having a client try to overrule my correction of a which to a thatwas one of the things that pushed me over the edge and made me start the Grammar Girl podcast.
Please explain the grammatical form, function and meaning of "having to a that was".
Is "was" the main verb?

I have checked the original. The word which and that were italicised, which makes a big difference. There should be a space between that and was.
