Haven’t got a hold vs haven’t gotten a hold

1. I haven’t got a hold of Bob.

2. I haven’t gotten a hold of Bob.

3. I haven’t got hold of Bob.

4. I haven’t gotten hold of Bob.


Which of these sentences are correct. I want to say - I still could not reach Bob

2. I haven’t gotten a hold of Bob.

3. I haven’t got hold of Bob.

4. I haven’t gotten hold of Bob.

Any of these might be used by a native speaker somewhere. "gotten" is used in AmE but not (usually) in BrE. My feeling is that the versions with "a hold" are also more likely in AmE, but not excl

In the U.S. you'll hear all four of those. I think "a hold" might be regional.

Personally, I'd use 4. I think.
