I sent a story to my friend long time ago, I cannot remember how long it was, probably last year or two, at least not recently. Today, I suddenly wanted to ask him if he had read it and how he felt about the story.
I have hard time deciding how to raise my question in English
1. Have you read the story I sent you before?
2. Did you read the story I sent you?
I think question 1 is more appropriate, if I sent him the story recently.
However, the action that he read the story probably has happened for quite some time. How should I ask the question?

#1 is not good English. We do not use "before" as you have. The present perfect is for more recent actions.
These are ok grammatically:
1. Have you read the story I sent you yesterday?
2. Did you read the story I sent you a long time ago?
3. I sent you
