Have you asked VS did you ask

Hey there,

Again, confusing tenses take the stage...
  • Have you asked anyone about it?
Sounds a bit odd, but on the other hand don't we use the present perfect for recent actions?
  • Did you ask anyone about it?
Sounds a great deal more common, but why do we use the past simple here?

Thanks

They are both common. The first is more common in BrE and the second is more common in AmE.

...
2 Did you ask anyone about it?
1. Asks about the current status of the situation. (~Where do we stand now?)

2. Asks whether 'an event in a story' occurred. (~Did this happen?)

Both are possible and appropriate.
