Is it correct? Should it be have? Neither?

The Past Perfect is used to indicate that something happened before some point or event in the past. Here, the event in the past is that I learned to plan ahead. Before that event, I was not an organized person.

The semi-colon is not wrong, but I would just use a period. The adverb 'however' is enough to show how the two statements are related.
