Q) What does the intended meaning of the underlined part?
Does it mean this?

1. Once the dogs find the insect nest with their sharp nose, people can have the insects and their nest removed by means of (or by the help of) the dogs. => people don't do anything but dogs find and remove the insects and their nest themselves

Or Is the underlined part the same as this?
