Why do they say "you would never have realized...?
Why don't they say "you would never realize...?

"you would never have realized ..." implies that the addressee actually has realized those things.

That is another correct possibility, but it's a claim about the present and/or future. The author wanted to say that this was a past event (You realized your strength) that could not happen without overcoming the obstacles mentioned.
