Have realised x Realised

Hello. What is the difference in meaning in the following two sentences?

1 - I have realised how big this gap can be.

2 - I realised how big this gap can be.

They look the same for me because "realise" involves knowing and understanding. If someone realises something, then he/she will know it in a different way forever.

Thank you.

The only difference is the verb form: simple past (a completed action) and present perfect (with possible time frames: a recently completed action, a repeated action that might continue, an action that started in the past and does not have a defined end point. In this case #2 is the more natural choice because of the reason you give.
