have read through and UNDERSTAND?

0 Hi,02br
00I was writing an email the other day with a friend looking at my screen over my shoulder. 02br
00"00I wanted to make sure you have read through the memo, and 01i00understand02i00 what is expected of you in this assignment00"02br
00The friend insisted that this was wrong construction, and taht I should have used 01i00understood 00, 02i00but I feel I was right. I am not very good with grammar, could someone please validate?02br
00Thanks very much!02br

0 I think you could make a convincing argument for either word. My preference is "understand" since the assignment lies in the future.02br

00I guess an argument for "understood" might be that the reading of the memo is in the past and so is the understanding of it (the memo, that is).0-

00I think "understand" is the better choice. (The comma is not required.)0-
