Have or has been

Hi,

There have been close to 50 deaths in the past month. (or is it has been?).

Deaths is plural, so a plural verb is needed. I find the past tense the most suitable: There were almost 50 deaths in the past month. CB

Thanks, CB. Can we also say '... were close to 50 deaths...' 'Close to' instead of 'almost'. Is that alright?
