Have or had?

Please, what's the correct form:

"They thought they have forgotten the Father's Day."

or

"They thought they had forgotten the Father's Day." ?

I suppose the correct is the latter/the second one, because we have two past actions at a indefinite time, one happened before the other = Past Perfect tense. Am I right ?

This one is correct. No article before "Father's Day."

"They thought they had forgotten the Father's Day." ?

Not this one. You've got thought (past) followed by have (present) [forgotten (perfect)]. thought is very, very rarely followed by a present form.
