Have nothing to do with each other

Please read these sentences.

"Many thought they were lovers. Police investigation, however, unveiled that they had nothing to do with each other."

Does this part, they had nothing to do with each other automatically mean that they used to be lovers?

They didn't. Do I have to change the sentence to suit the meaning?
