I think your suggested version sounds somewhat more formal and objective, which is what I wanted to achieve in the academic context that I was writing in.
Hi, I wasn't really trying to replace your sentence. I thought perhaps you were unsure of how to parse it, as it had a few appendages. So I tried to write something shorter with the same basic form. - not really intended as a substitute. Yours is fine. I left a lot of stuff out.
