Have I used the semi-colon correctly?

The sentence is:

The play was about a girl on the beach; it was very entertaining.

Thank you

No. You have two unrelated ideas that should be in two separate sentences. The semicolon implies that the second clause amplifies the first, and it does not. If it had been "The play had acrobats, tongue-twisters, a light show, and dogs dancing; it was very entertaining", then, yes. Most girls on the beach aren't very entertaining.

The colon is fine in BrE. The second clause tells us more about the play.

enoon, I meant the play was entertaining, not the girl.

Thanks again.

Of course you did. I meant that the fact that the play was about a girl on the beach is no earnest of its entertainment value (though I will admit it is a quite promising premise), and it therefore does not belong together with that thought in the same
