Grammar

have gone there vs have been there

The following sentences are taken from "English File pre-intermediate" edition. The task is to put the verb in brackets into the appropriate tense, the past simple or the present perfect. Pondering over the evident mistake - the authors should have put 'be' instead of 'go' inside the brackets to get 'been' as a required answer - led me to further confusion...

What`s wrong with saying 'we`ve gone there 3 times now' if we refer to the instances of departure from, let`s say, homeland to a foreign country?
Likewise, does it sound OK for a native speaker if I ask 'have you ever gone there' implying 'have you ever left your home for that place'?

We 4_________ (go) there three times now!  8_________ (you / ever / go) there?

Thanks for your answers in advance!

Some people do consider "been", in this usage, to be a past participle of "go". I have never been very convinced myself, but perhaps the author is one of those who does.
