I've gone to the seminary. Pack up your things, because we're going back to Spain tonight. I'll be back by late afternoon.

That's a note the protagonist wrote to his beloved before he went to seminary. I don't understand why he said 'I've gone' and not 'I'm going', as he wrote the note before he left?
