Have done before [are] or [were]

I have made up the example below.

(1) The sports I have played before are baseball, basketball and soccer.

My non-native English speaking friends think "were" should be used because "before" is referring to something that took place in the past. Their revision is given below.

(2) The sports I have played before were baseball, basketball and soccer.

Which one is correct: are or were? Thank you very much for your time and help.
