Have breakfast/have a breakfast?

In my understanding, "a" before breakfast is unnecessary in the following sentence.
1) They had breakfast at the hotel.

Is the following sentence is acceptable, too, if it means that they each had a simple breakfast at the hotel?
2) They had a breakfast at the hotel.

Breakfast usually doesn't require an article. Susan and I had breakfast together this morning. Why don't we talk about it at breakfast tomorrow?

Ahh! Good question! Now you have modified the sentence by inserting an adjective before "breakfast" which changes the rules. In this case "I had a small breakfast this morning" is correct.

I am glad you asked this question!
