confused with these verb sentences...need back up

Initial readings were taken from Cam 1 to Cam 10 before the combustion. or
Initial readings have been taken from Cam 1 to Cam 10 before the combustion.

im writing invoice to a company and these usage of have been and were makes me uncertain. thanks
