Have a question

Hi,

Please look at the following sentence.

"I reach gaily into the envelope, but my fingers don't quite pull out the bill. They remain clutched around it while my mind is seized."

Does "They remain clutched" mean "my fingers remain hold"?

And what's the meaning of "my mind is seized"?

Thank you.

Top answer

Indeed, the 'clutched around' means they keep holding on to the bill. The 'seized' in this context does not have its usual meaning of 'take hold of'. It means 'to have jammed/frozen/stopped working' and is usually used about machines or engines.

  • It means done with great joy/lightness of heart.
