"have a doctorate in"

Here's a line from a tv show titled "Wild Bill" :

"I have, however, been to UCLA where I got my degree in criminology. To go along with my Master's from Yale. I also have a doctorate in statistical mapping from MIT."

Does "have a doctorate in" mean "get a doctorate degree" or "study for doctorate" in the context that I provide?
