I thought that at first too, Clive, but if you look at the idea — the writer is saying we should leave a job even if we only dislike it.

Thank you for the clarification! That is exactly what have confused be in the first place, only that I had a wrong idea reading it. I thought 'even' meant here intensifying of negative emotions, while it refers to words 'to much of our time'.
