Which one is right?

But if I have to use that exact sentence, which one works better: has or have. Or are they both wrong?

Only the singular verb (has) is correct in your exact sentence.

My "second version" was just an attempt to show the singular subject and verb in isolation.

It's a common trap: The box of receipts is missing.

We sometimes want to make the verb agree with the plural "receipts," because it's closer.
