has/had

Can you say: I can't believe I found out my friend has/had herpes!

And

I realized she had/has a lying problem.

Are both OK or should I stick to the same tense?

Are you shocked that you found out? (I can't believe I found out)
Or are you shocked that she has it? (I can't believe my friend has herpes.)

The natures of any of the strains of the herpes virsus is that they are always with you, so use "has." Something like 2/3 of the world's population has herpes simplex I so it's not that shocking at all.
