Has lasted or has been lasting?

If I'll like to say that a symptom (or probably anything else) first started a few days ago, and now it's still there, the symptom hasn't gone away at the moment of speech, which of the following is correct?

1. The symptom has lasted for a few days

2. The symptom has been lasting for a few days?

I think 1 is correct and 2 sounds strange, however, I am unable to logically explain the choice
