Has his head on straight

Zinkoff was the last name of a famous sports announcer in Philadelphia. I thought it fit this kid perfectly. I hope you get the point of the title. "Loser" is what other kids call him--it's not what he is. This is a kid who, without even trying of knowing it, has his head on straight. Why? Because he throws himself into life without regard to who gets the blue ribbon.

Hi,

The above is written by Jerry Spinelli about his novel "Loser." I'm not sure what the bolded parts mean. Could you shed some light? Thanks.
