Has / have

A teacher has to / have to deal with their students patiently.

Which one is correct, please?

Actually it's the 'to' that confuses me, as I have always seen 'have to'.

Thanks.

Top answer

A teacher has to / have to deal with their students patiently. Teacher is singular, so the verb must be the 3rd person singular has. To is just a marker of the infinitival clause.

Yes, "teacher" is third person plural, so the correct conjugation is "has".
