Has died?

Hi teachers!

Today I'm going to ask about Present Perfect.

When I was in middle school, my teacher taught us that #6 is very awkward and native speakers never say like that. We should use #1~5 instead, she argued.

But, I saw the headline "Ivana Trump, First Wife of Former President, Has Died" on an Internet news yesterday.

Then, was my teacher was wrong?

1. She died 2 years ago. (0)

2. She has been dead for 2 years.(0)

3. Two years have passed since she died.(0)

4. It's been 2 years since she died. (0)

5. She died in 2020. (0)

6. She has died. (?)

As always, many thanks native speakers of English.

Michelle Cha Then, was my teacher was wrong? It seems so. She has died is fine grammatically, and it seems appropriate as an announcement in the news.

  • She has died is fine grammatically, and it seems appropriate as an announcement in the news.
  • Maybe it's less appropriate in other contexts.
  • I don't think I'd say it in an ordinary, everyday conversation, but I don't know exactly why.
