Has been/long thought

Hi

The author of a book about magic writes:

The broom has been used for protective purposes as well. Babies and small children were long thought to be susceptible to psychic and other forms of attack.

Does "has been used" mean that it's still used for this purpose or not?

"Children were long thought ..." Does it mean that for a long time in the past it was thought that kids were susceptible to such attacks? But it doesn't refer to the present day?

Without more context, I would venture to say that your questions refer to the past and that the actions do not continue into the present. John
