Has been or had been

Earlier this morning, I was browsing the internet and found out that Google has been/had been a thing since 1998.
This is my original sentence.

While I do realize "found out" is the past simple, I feel like "has been" works better than "had been" due to how recently this happened, but I would still say that "had been" is correct because of reported speech rules. Can someone explain please?

Necrophagist I feel like "has been" works better than "had been" due to how recently this happened, but I would still say that "had been" is correct because of reported speech rules. I agree (though it isn't strictly speaking "reported speech").
