Speech & Pronunciation

Has anybody else noticed a rise of people wanting to learn elocution?

I would be interested to know if anyone else has noticed a rise in people wanting to learn how to speak clearly and in particular learn elocution.

I've certainly noticed that people of all ages and background seems to be wanting to learn how to speak clearly. Maybe it's because people want to get ahead and know that speaking clearly really help.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

No. Speaking too clearly and with a boring accent is out of fashion. The new standard English for ESL students is becoming Estuary English, and not RP anymore (for UK English).

I would have agreed with your points say even up to a couple of years ago but from how I'm seeing things people are wanting to take elocution lessons. Take my father-in-law for instance who wanted elocution lessons. He was brought up in Archway, London and has a perfectly acceptable North London accent.

He's a successful businessman and magistrate. He certainly does not want to change h

RedRokTimAre elocution lessons back in fashion where you are?
Back? Surely you jest. This is the wild west, for goodness' sake. Elocution was never in fashion! Besides, that sort of thing is for people with more money than things to spend it on, and if you haven't noticed, nobody's got much money these days, what with the world-wide recession.

Why GG, you took the words right out of my mouth! Now that's elocution! Have you tried it with marbles in your mouth yet?
