Is the red sentence totally natural in spoken and written English? Any suggestions please?

Those were difficult times. Hardly was I out of one problem when the other surfaced.

If you are assigned to use "hardly" in this manner, it is a decent sentence. I wouldn't invert the word order for this particular sentence. It's right, but it doesn't sound very good.

It's OK for written English, but it wouldn't be very likely to come up in a conversatio
