Harder than a punching bag

Can one say
a.I hit it harder than a punching bag.

?

The intended meaning would either be
1. I hit it harder than I would hit a punching bag
or
2. I hit it harder than a punching bag is hit.

I am not sure which is the correct meaning..

Many thanks.

The normal term is "punchbag".

Edit: apparently "punching bag" is American, while "punchbag" is British. Sorry, I didn't know that.

Yes, and it sometimes is used allegorically for a person that everyone picks on.

What i understand by your sentence is that you are hitting it harder than a punching bag, in other words punching bag is also hitting it.

I couldn't agree more. Maybe this is more clear. I hit it (much) harder than I would have on a punching bag.
