"Hard road"

"I recommend to practice the language, I didn't feel like I didn't understand something (linguistically) because I took the hard road."

What does "hard road" mean in this case? "reading with a dictionary"?

It means a difficult path, presumably a difficult path of study, but it is no more specific than that. The sentence as a whole is horrible.
