Hard puzzle

I'm new to posting here... and I'm likely to forget I've posted here. So, I'm going to add my email incase anyone is interested in the answer. My grandfather was an English professor at one of the top 10 colleges here in the United States and he used this as a bonus question on one of his exams. By the way, only one person got the answer right.
