Hard puzzle

I'm new to posting here... and I'm likely to forget I've posted here. So, I'm going to add my email incase anyone is interested in the answer. My grandfather was an English professor at one of the top 10 colleges here in the United States and he used this as a bonus question on one of his exams. By the way, only one person got the answer right.

Punctuate this sentence to make sense:

Smith where Jones had had had had had had had had had had had the instructor’s approval.

Good Luck.

That one makes sense. However, Grandpa's answer was:

Smith, where Jones had had "had had" had had "had". "Had had" had had the instructor's approval.

Well done. Although it seems you are the inhouse master here. I look forward to learning something I can pass along at Christmas dinner this year!
