Hard and tough

Hi

I suppose that the phrase "hard and tough" can mean different things, but if someone refers to music as hard and tough, what it's really like? Loud?

EG: We wanted to get something "hard and tough" and atmospheric with great melodic vocals.

Your question is hard and tough! In music, or in any of the arts, such terms are completely impressionistic. I don't think there are any exact meanings for these words that attempt to describe certain styles.
